How to partially refund a subscription
In this help article, we'll show you how to partially refund your customer's subscription.
You may need to partially refund a customer's subscription if they requested it, if there was a mistake, or any other reasons.
You can partially refund their subscription within your Checkout Page account.
Please note that:
- Stripe charges transaction fees
- Partially refunding a subscription does not cancel the subscription. Click here to learn more on how to cancel a subscription
- You can refund a minimum of 50 cents
Partial refund
You can partially refund the subscription in your Checkout Page account with the following steps:
- Click Subscriptions from the left-side menu
- Select the subscription in question

3. Select the Payments tab.
Here you will see all the recurring payments that have went through. For example, if the customer has been subscribed for a year and is billed monthly, there will be 12 payment lines.
4. Click Refund Payment on the payment in question

5. A pop-up will appear where you can:
- Input the partial amount
- Select the reason for the partial refund from the drop-down menu
- State your reason for the partial refund. This will not be shown to your customers and is for internal records only.
- Enable for a Refund email to be sent to the customer or disable the feature for no email to be sent

6. Click to Refund payment!
Refund status
The payment line under the Payments tab will be updated to "Partially refunded" after the partial refund is issued.

Stripe Refund PDF invoice
The payment line under the Payments tab also includes an Invoice that outlines the partial refund. This invoice is generated by Stripe.
The Invoice will be updated with every new partial payment that is refunded.

Refund email
When a subscription is partially refunded and if you enabled for the Refund email to be sent, the customer will receive an email notifying them of the partial refund.
Under the Emails tab, you will see a new line appear at the top that records a progress log of the sent Refund email.
The Stripe Refund PDF invoice will be attached to the Refund email.

You can click View email on the log to see how the email would appear to your customers.
Customers can view and manage their subscriptions from the Refund email, which will take them to the Customer portal.

Refunding the remaining amount
You may choose to refund the remaining amount after a partial refund was made for various reasons.
You can refund the remaining amount of their subscription payment within your Checkout Page account with the following steps:
- Click Subscriptions from the left-side menu
- Select the subscription in question

- Input the remaining refund amount
- Select the reason for the remaining refund from the drop-down menu
- State your reason for the remaining refund. This will not be shown to your customers and is for internal records only.
- Enable for a Refund email to be sent to the customer or disable the feature for no email to be sent

6. Click to Refund payment!
Refund status
The payment line under the Payments tab will be updated to "Refunded" after the remaining refund is issued because the entire amount has now been refunded.
