How Square fees work

Square charges a percentage plus a fixed fee on every payment, and the rate depends on how the card is taken, which plan you are on, and which country you sell in.

Square’s rate structure

Every Square fee is a percentage of the payment plus a fixed amount, set by payment method. In the US on the Free plan, in-person payments (tap, dip, or swipe) cost 2.6% + $0.15, online payments and card-paid invoices cost 3.3% + $0.30, manually keyed and card-on-file payments cost 3.5% + $0.15, ACH bank transfers cost 1% with a $1.00 minimum, and Afterpay purchases cost 6% + $0.30.

In the UK, Square charges 1.75% for in-person payments, 1.4% + £0.25 online for UK cards, 2.5% + £0.25 online for non-UK cards, and 2.5% for keyed payments and invoices, with a 1.5% surcharge on non-UK issued cards taken in person, keyed, or invoiced.

Why your fee can be higher than 2.6%

The 2.6% rate only applies when the card is physically present. The moment it is not, you move into a higher bracket: manually keyed entry and card on file cost 3.5% + $0.15, card-paid invoices cost 3.3% + $0.30, and Afterpay costs 6% + $0.30. These are the non-qualified scenarios that quietly push a merchant’s blended rate well past the headline number.

The fixed fee matters too. On a $10 in-person payment the total fee is $0.41, an effective rate of 4.1%, not 2.6%. The smaller your average sale, the further your real rate drifts from the sticker rate.

Plan tiers: Free, Plus, and Premium

Square’s US processing rates step down by plan. In person, the Free plan pays 2.6% + $0.15, Plus pays 2.5% + $0.15, and Premium pays 2.4% + $0.15. Online, the Free plan pays 3.3% + $0.30 while Plus and Premium pay 2.9% + $0.30.

The catch is that Plus and Premium carry monthly software fees, so the lower rates only pay off at real volume. Use the monthly volume field in the calculator to see your annual fee cost before deciding whether an upgrade earns its keep.

Watch out for stale rates

Square changed its pricing, and much of the internet did not notice. Several popular Square fee calculators still show the pre-2025 $0.10 fixed fee on swiped payments, while Square’s current published in-person rate is 2.6% + $0.15. Others still list 2.9% + $0.30 for online payments, while the Free plan online rate is now 3.3% + $0.30.

Every figure on this page comes from the same rate config that powers the calculator above, verified against Square’s current published pricing on squareup.com in June 2026.

Square fees on a $100 payment: worked example

The Square fee on a $100 in-person payment is $2.75. Square charges 2.6% + $0.15 per tap, dip, or swipe on the Free plan, so 2.6% of $100 is $2.60, plus the $0.15 fixed fee, for a total of $2.75. You take home $97.25, an effective rate of 2.75%.

The Square fee on a $100 online payment is $3.60 on the Free plan. Square’s current Free plan online rate is 3.3% + $0.30, so 3.3% of $100 is $3.30, plus the $0.30 fixed fee, for $3.60 total and a take-home of $96.40. On Plus and Premium plans the online rate drops to 2.9% + $0.30, a fee of $3.20.

At larger amounts the fixed fee fades: a $1,000 in-person payment costs $26.15, an effective rate of 2.615%. ACH works differently because of the minimum: a $100 bank transfer costs exactly $1.00, but a $50 transfer also costs $1.00 because the 1% fee, which would be $0.50, is below Square’s $1.00 minimum. And in reverse, to take home $100 from an online card payment on the Free plan you should charge $103.72.
