How Gumroad pricing and fees work

Gumroad charges a flat 10% plus $0.50 on every direct sale, with card processing (around 2.9% + $0.30) on top. On a $40 product you keep about $34.04. Sales through Gumroad Discover are charged 30%, with processing included.

How much does Gumroad charge?

On a direct sale, Gumroad charges a flat 10% plus $0.50, and card processing (about 2.9% + $0.30 on Stripe, or 3.49% + $0.49 on PayPal) comes on top. There is no monthly fee, so you only pay when you sell. On a $40 product that works out to $4.50 in Gumroad fees and roughly $1.46 in processing, leaving you about $34.04, an effective rate near 14.9%.

Because the $0.50 is fixed, low-priced products feel the fee more sharply: on a $5 sale the flat fee alone is 10% of the price. For a complete, worked-through guide see our full Gumroad fees breakdown.

Direct sales vs Gumroad Discover

Gumroad has two fee tiers. A direct sale, where you send the buyer yourself through a link, email, or your own site, is charged 10% + $0.50 plus processing. A Discover sale, where Gumroad’s marketplace surfaces your product to a new buyer, is charged a flat 30% with payment processing already included.

Discover can be worth it for the extra reach, but the 30% rate is three times the direct rate. Most established sellers drive their own traffic to keep sales on the cheaper direct tier. Toggle between Direct and Discover in the calculator to compare your take-home on each.

Does Gumroad have hidden fees?

Gumroad’s pricing is published, but a few costs catch sellers out. Payment processing is charged separately on direct sales, so the real cost is higher than the headline 10% + $0.50. Fees are non-refundable: if you refund a buyer, Gumroad keeps its fee and the processing fee, so you lose money on refunds and chargebacks.

There is also a currency-conversion cost when you sell into other currencies, and payouts can carry their own transfer costs depending on your country. None of this is hidden exactly, but it means your blended rate is usually a few points above the sticker rate.

How Gumroad fees add up at scale

Per sale, 10% + $0.50 looks small. Across a year of volume it is not. Sell a $40 product 1,000 times and Gumroad’s platform fee plus processing comes to roughly $5,960, leaving you about $34,040 of $40,000 in revenue. The flat $0.50 alone is $500 across those sales.
