Stripe Connect

What is Stripe Connect?

Stripe Connect routes payments directly into a seller's own Stripe account, rather than into the software platform's account first. The platform handles onboarding, payouts, and account management on the seller's behalf, but never takes custody of the money along the way.

How Stripe Connect works

Three parties are involved: Stripe itself, the platform, and the connected account. The connected account belongs to the seller, whether the seller creates it themselves or Stripe creates it for them automatically during onboarding.

The platform, in this case a checkout, marketplace, or booking tool, facilitates that onboarding and manages the day-to-day account experience, so the seller does not need to deal with Stripe's setup process directly.

When a customer pays, the funds settle directly into the seller's own connected account rather than passing through the platform's balance first. The platform coordinates the flow, verifies the seller during onboarding, and, where applicable, collects its own fees as a separate transfer rather than by holding customer funds itself. This is the structural detail that makes Stripe Connect fundamentally different from a platform that collects payments into its own account and pays sellers out later on a schedule of its own choosing.

Stripe Connect vs a regular Stripe account

"Stripe" and "Stripe Connect" describe two different relationships with the same company, and mixing them up is a common point of confusion.

  • A regular Stripe account is what a business sets up directly with Stripe to accept payments for itself, with no platform involved.
  • Stripe Connect is what a platform uses to give many separate businesses their own Stripe presence, without each business having to independently discover and sign up with Stripe.

A seller using a platform built on Stripe Connect is not signing up for a lesser version of Stripe. Depending on the account type, their connected account can carry nearly all the functionality of a standalone Stripe account, just reached through the platform's onboarding flow instead of Stripe's own signup page.

Stripe Connect account types

Stripe Connect supports a few different account types, and the choice affects how much of the payments experience the seller controls directly versus how much the platform manages on their behalf.

Account type Who controls the dashboard Who handles compliance Typical use
Standard The seller, through their own full Stripe dashboard The seller, directly with Stripe Sellers who already have, or want, a standalone Stripe account with full control
Express The seller, through a simplified Stripe-hosted dashboard Shared between Stripe and the platform Platforms onboarding many sellers quickly with a lighter-touch setup process
Custom The platform builds the entire interface; the seller may never see a Stripe dashboard at all Primarily the platform Platforms that want full control over branding and the seller-facing experience

Standard gives the seller the most independence. Express trades some of that independence for faster, simpler onboarding. Custom hands almost all interface control to the platform, at the cost of the seller's direct visibility into Stripe itself.

Why platforms use Stripe Connect

Marketplaces, SaaS tools, and checkout or event platforms all face the same problem: they need to pay out to many independent sellers without becoming a money transmitter themselves. Building that infrastructure directly, holding funds, verifying identities, filing licenses in every jurisdiction where sellers operate, is a heavy regulatory lift for a business whose actual product is something else.

Stripe Connect takes on that weight:

  • Identity verification. Confirming who a seller is before letting them accept payments, a legal requirement in most jurisdictions, happens through Stripe's onboarding rather than being built by the platform from scratch.
  • Payout scheduling and delivery. Moving money to a seller's bank account on a recurring schedule is Stripe's responsibility once a connected account is set up.
  • Regulatory compliance across regions. Money movement rules differ by country and even by state; Stripe Connect absorbs much of that complexity.

Without Stripe Connect, a platform wanting to pay out to independent sellers would need to either become a licensed money transmitter itself, a slow and expensive undertaking, or build a much more limited product that never touches seller payouts at all.

How Checkout Page uses Stripe Connect

Checkout Page runs on Stripe Connect for every payment processed through it. Each seller connects their own Stripe account, either one they already have or one created during onboarding, and every payment settles directly into that account, never into Checkout Page's own balance.

This is also why Checkout Page is not a merchant of record: the seller stays the merchant of record for their own transactions, with their own payout schedule, their own Stripe dashboard, and their own dispute and chargeback handling through Stripe rather than through an intermediary.

Checkout Page's role sits on top of that infrastructure: the checkout page, the sales funnel, the product catalog, the branding, the order bumps and upsells, all built on Stripe Connect rather than standing between the seller and their money. For a seller evaluating a checkout platform, this matters because it determines who holds their funds and on what schedule, and on Stripe Connect that answer is straightforward: it is the seller's own Stripe account and the seller's own payout timing.

A coach selling a cohort-based program, or a nonprofit collecting donations through a branded page, both connect their own Stripe account once during setup and never think about it again day to day. Every payment lands in that same account, alongside any other payments they process outside Checkout Page, since it is genuinely their own Stripe account rather than a sub-ledger inside someone else's. If they ever stopped using Checkout Page, their Stripe account, transaction history, and customer payment data would go with them, because none of it ever belonged to the platform.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need my own Stripe account to use Stripe Connect?
You typically end up with one either way. On a platform built with Stripe Connect, a connected Stripe account is created for you as part of onboarding if you do not already have one, so you do not need to set one up separately in advance.
Is Stripe Connect the same as a regular Stripe account?
Not quite. A regular Stripe account is a standalone account a business sets up directly with Stripe. A Stripe Connect account is a connected account created and managed through a platform, though depending on the account type it can still function much like a full Stripe account.
What does Stripe Connect cost?
Stripe Connect pricing is set by Stripe and changes over time, so it is not something to quote as a fixed figure here. A payment fee calculator gives a current, accurate estimate for a given transaction volume.
