How to add custom fields
How to add custom fields to collect additional customer information
What are form fields?
Form fields collect information from customers when they complete your page. For example, you can ask for a company name, collect delivery details or ask about dietary requirements.
Some fields have a specific purpose: Quantity lets customers choose how many units to purchase, while Discount code lets them apply a coupon.
Add a field using Quick add
Quick add provides shortcuts for common fields, including Company name, Website, Dietary requirements and a terms and conditions checkbox.
- Open the page you want to edit.
- Select Form fields in the sidebar.
- Find Quick add beneath your existing fields.
- Select the field you want to add.
- Click the added field to review and customise its settings.
- Click Save after making changes.
Choose a field type
The field picker lets you choose how customers answer a question, such as entering text, selecting a date or choosing from a list.
Select a field type to see its description and example, then configure its settings.
To add a field directly to an existing group, click Add to group and select the field type.
Edit a field
In Form fields, click a field to open its settings. The settings available depend on the field type.
Label
The label tells customers what to enter. Use a clear name or question, such as “Company name” or “Do you have any dietary requirements?”
Placeholder
Placeholder text appears inside an empty input. Use it to show an example answer.
For example, a field labelled “Website” could use “https://example.com” as its placeholder.
Description
A description appears beneath the field in smaller text. Use it for instructions customers may need while answering.
For example: “Include any allergies we should share with the caterer.”
Required
Turn on Required when customers must complete the field before continuing.
Leave it off for information customers can choose whether to provide.
Data type
Data types identify standard customer details so connected services such as Stripe and Zapier can recognise them correctly.
Choose a matching data type when collecting names, contact details, company information or billing and shipping details. For example, a field labelled “Your full name” should use Customer name.
Leave it unset for custom questions such as dietary requirements or project details.
Conditional logic
Use Conditional logic to show a field based on an answer elsewhere in the form.
For example, show a question asking for dietary details only after a customer indicates they have dietary requirements.
See Conditional logic for custom fields.
Reference
A field’s Reference, found under Additional settings, identifies it in URL parameters and integrations.
Use the reference when passing information through a URL to prefill the field. See Prefill checkout fields.
Rearrange fields
In Form fields, drag fields into the order you want customers to complete them.
Move a field into a group
Either drag the field into the group or:
- Open the field’s menu.
- Select Move to.
- Choose the destination group.
Move a field out of a group
- Open the field’s menu.
- Select Move to → Outside a group.
Organise fields into sections and columns
Use layout elements to make your form easier to follow:
| Element | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Group | Keep related fields together and display them in one to four columns. |
| Heading | Introduce a main section. |
| Subheading | Introduce a smaller section. |
| Divider | Visually separate parts of the form. |
For example, place First name and Last name in a two-column group, then add a heading before your delivery questions.
To change a group’s column layout, use the column selector beside the group’s name.
Duplicate a field
Use Duplicate when you want to create a similar field without starting from scratch.
- Open the field’s menu.
- Select Duplicate.
- Edit the copied field’s label and settings.
- Click Save.
Disable or delete a field
In Form fields, open the field’s menu and select Disable or Delete.
Use Disable when you want to stop using a field temporarily. Use Delete when you want to remove it.
Disabling is separate from the Hide field setting used with prefilled fields. For hidden-field behaviour and exceptions, see How to hide checkout fields.
Check your form before sharing
Use the preview to check the field order, wording and layout.
Test the form to confirm that:
- Required fields must be completed.
- Conditional fields appear when the relevant answers are selected.
- Fields appear in the intended order and groups.
- Any prefilled values appear correctly.
For checkout testing instructions, see Test payments on Checkout Page.
