Subscription status

Overview of subscription status types and their meanings across the platform and Stripe

What is a subscription status?

Subscription status shows the current state: active, , past due, or canceled. Status updates automatically based on payment and customer actions.

Statuses

Incomplete — a subscription signup has been attempted but payment has not been collected. This is the default status on creation. If payment succeeds, the status moves to Active (or Trialing). If the customer leaves and subscribes again, a new subscription is created.

Incomplete expired — the customer did not complete payment within 24–48 hours of signup.

Trialing — a subscription with a free or paid trial has been successfully created and the trial period is active.

Scheduled — the subscription has a future start date. It shows as Scheduled in Checkout Page and Trialing until in Stripe.

Active — payment has been collected and the subscription is running.

Completed — all payments in a fixed payment plan have been collected. The status in Stripe changes to Canceled at this point.

Past due — the most recent recurring payment (not the first) has failed. Retry rules can be managed in your Stripe Billing dashboard.

Canceled — the subscription has been canceled by you, the customer, or due to continued failed payments.

Failed — a subscription payment has failed. Stripe will retry based on your account settings. Checkout Page sends a notification email to the merchant but not to the customer.

Refunded — you have refunded a subscription payment.
