Trials
How to give customers free or paid access before billing starts
Available on: recurring prices — subscriptions and payment plans, with a fixed price or pay what you want.
What is a trial?
A trial gives the customer access for a set number of days before the first full charge. When the trial ends, billing starts automatically.
Example: A customer buys a subscription on May 3 at 14:00 with a 7-day trial. The first charge is taken on May 10 at 14:00.
Free and paid trials
- Free — the customer pays nothing during the trial.
- Paid — the customer pays an amount up front for the trial period, then moves on to the normal price.
How to add a trial
- Go to Storefront → Checkout pages.
- Open the checkout you want to edit.
- Go to Product → Details.
- Select Free or Paid from the Trial dropdown.
- Enter the number of days in Trial duration.
- For a paid trial, enter the amount in the Setup fee field.
- Click Save.
Canceling during a trial
Customers can cancel from the customer portal before the trial ends, and won't be charged.
Changing the trial length after a customer has bought
Trial dates are changed in Stripe, not in Checkout Page.
- Go to Storefront → Subscriptions and open the subscription.
- Click View in Stripe from the right-side menu.
- In Stripe, click Actions → Update subscription.
- Edit the Free trial days value.
