Multiple selections for dropdown and multiple choice fields
Learn how to let customers select multiple options when checking out or filling in a form.
What are multiple selections?
Multiple selections allow customers to choose more than one answer in a dropdown select or multiple choice field.
You can allow customers to select any number of options or set specific limits, such as choosing at least two or up to three options.
Both dropdown select and multiple choice fields support multiple selections on checkout pages, event pages, and forms.
By default, both field types allow customers to select only one option. You can change this using the Selections allowed setting.
How to allow multiple selections
- Open your checkout page, event, or form in the editor.
- Go to Form fields on a checkout page or event, or Form on a form.
- Click Add field or edit an existing field.
- Under Field type, select Dropdown select or Multiple choice.
- Enter a Label and add your Options.
- Under Selections allowed, choose how many options customers can select.
- Click Save.
Configure selection limits
The Selections allowed setting provides six options:
- One: Customers can select only one option.
- Any number: Customers can select as many options as they like.
- At least: Set the minimum number of selections.
- Up to: Set the maximum number of selections.
- Exactly: Set a specific number of selections.
- Between: Set a minimum and maximum number of selections.
For example, selecting Between 1 and 3 allows customers to choose one, two, or three options.
Required fields
Selections allowed and Required are separate settings.
- Selections allowed controls how many options customers can select.
- Required determines whether customers must answer the question.
For example, choosing Exactly 2 does not automatically make the field required. Customers can leave it unanswered unless Required is enabled. If they do answer, they must select exactly two options.
Selection limits and validation
If customers select too many or too few options, they'll see a validation message explaining what they need to change before continuing.
For example, if you've set Between 1 and 3, customers will be asked to adjust their selection if they choose more than three options.
How multiple selections appear to customers
The appearance depends on the field type:
- Dropdown select: Customers select multiple options from a dropdown menu. Their selections appear together in the field.
- Multiple choice: Customers select multiple options using checkboxes instead of radio buttons.
Both field types support the same selection limits.
Use multiple selections with conditional logic
Multiple selections also work with conditional logic, allowing you to show or hide fields based on the options customers select.
For example, if customers select multiple interests, you can show additional questions based on their selections.
