Let customers cover processing fees
How to let customers cover processing fees at checkout.
What is fee coverage?
Fee coverage lets customers choose to add a contribution towards your payment processing costs. You set a percentage, a fixed amount, or both.
It works on checkout pages and event pages, including one-time payments, subscriptions, and payment plans.
Fee coverage is available on all Checkout Page plans, including the Free plan.
How to enable fee coverage
- Open the checkout or event you want to edit.
- Go to Checkout → Cover processing fees.
- Turn on Let customers cover processing fees.
- Enter a Percentage, a Fixed amount, or both.
- Edit the Label shown to customers. The default is “Help cover processing fees”.
- Click Save.
The fixed amount uses your checkout or event’s currency. For example, enter 0.30 for $0.30.
Customer options
- Show fee amount on label: Displays the contribution amount next to the label. This is enabled by default.
- Preselect fee coverage for customers: Selects fee coverage by default. Customers can deselect it before paying.
Customers choose whether to cover fees at checkout. For subscriptions and payment plans, that choice applies to future payments too.
What rate should I enter?
Use your Stripe processing rate as a starting point. Check your Stripe account or Stripe’s pricing for your rates.
The contribution uses the rate you enter, so it may differ from Stripe’s actual fee. The calculation does not automatically account for the cost of processing the contribution itself.
How the contribution is calculated
The percentage applies to the amount being paid, including products or tickets after discounts, order bumps, booking fees, additional fees, and tax. The fixed amount is then added.
For example, on a $50 payment with a contribution of 2.9% + $0.30:
- Percentage: $50 × 2.9% = $1.45
- Fixed amount: $0.30
- Contribution: $1.75
- Total paid: $51.75
How tax works
The contribution is calculated on the total including tax. It is added after tax, and no tax is charged on the contribution itself.
What customers see
Customers see the option to cover processing fees above the price breakdown.
Selecting it adds a Processing fee contribution line and increases the total. Deselecting it removes the contribution.
The option is not shown for free orders or when customers choose a manual payment option, such as invoice or cash on delivery.
Using fee coverage with additional fees
Fee coverage does not replace or remove any additional fees you have set up.
If you already charge an additional processing fee, customers who choose to cover processing fees will pay both. Review your existing fees before enabling this option.
Subscriptions and payment plans
If a customer chooses to cover processing fees, a contribution is added to every subscription renewal or payment-plan installment.
The contribution adjusts to the payment amount, including when a coupon discount ends.
Customers cannot turn off fee coverage themselves after subscribing.
Changing the rate
The rate is saved when the customer subscribes. Changing the rate on your checkout does not change the rate saved for existing subscriptions.
Free trials
No contribution is charged during a free trial unless there is an upfront payment, such as a setup fee. If there is, a contribution applies to that payment.
During a free trial, the fee coverage option shows the contribution for the renewal payment.
Deposits
The contribution is calculated on the deposit amount. It does not apply to the remaining balance.
Customize the appearance
- Open Theme.
- Go to Processing fee.
- Under Style → Selector, choose Checkbox, Switch, or Mark.
- Adjust the styling to match your checkout.
To change the contribution’s label in the checkout price breakdown, go to Theme → Custom labels → Price breakdown processing fee contribution.
How contributions appear after payment
The contribution appears separately as Processing fee contribution on:
- The order in your dashboard.
- The customer’s confirmation email.
- The invoice.
Refunds
A full refund includes the processing fee contribution.
Monthly sales limits
Processing fee contributions count towards your monthly sales limit.
