How to create and manage coupon codes for customer discounts

What is a coupon code?

A coupon code applies a discount to a checkout. You can set a percentage or fixed-amount discount, quantity limits, and expiration dates. Customers enter the code at checkout to claim the discount.

How to create a coupon code

  1. Go to Coupons from the left-side menu and click Create coupon.
  2. Fill in the coupon form (see fields below).
  3. Click Save.

Coupon fields

  • Label — a name for your reference, not visible to customers.
  • Code — the code customers enter at checkout (e.g. FIRST20).
  • Discount type:
    • Fixed amount — a set amount off the total (e.g. $25 off).
    • Percentage — a percentage off the total (e.g. 20% off).
  • Duration (subscriptions only):
    • Every payment — discount applies to every payment.
    • First payment — discount applies to the first payment only.
    • Multiple payments — discount applies for a set number of months.
  • Redemption limits:
    • Number of redemptions — set the total number of times the coupon can be used across all customers. This does not limit per-customer usage.
    • Expiry date — set a date and time when the coupon expires (based on your account time zone).
    • Limit to specific pages — restrict the coupon to one or more specific pages.

It is not currently possible to set a minimum purchase value for a coupon code.

How to add the discount code field to a checkout

  1. Go to Pages and open the checkout.
  2. Go to Checkout → Discount code.
  3. Enable the field.

How to edit a coupon code

  1. Go to Coupons and click on the coupon.
  2. Click Edit coupon in the top right corner.

How to delete a coupon code

  1. Go to Coupons and click on the coupon.
  2. Click Delete coupon in the top right corner and confirm.

Deleted coupons cannot be recovered.

How to track coupon code usage

Coupons overview

Go to Coupons from the left-side menu to see all your coupons. Each coupon shows the label, code, discount value, number of redemptions, and status.

Coupon status

  • Valid — the coupon is active and can be used.
  • Expired — the coupon has reached its redemption limit or expiry date.

Coupons and additional fees

Coupon behavior depends on whether the coupon is a fixed amount discount or a percentage discount.

Fixed amount coupons

For fixed amount coupons, fees are calculated after the coupon discount has been applied to the invoice total.

Examples:

  • $100 subscription
  • $10 off coupon
  • 10% fee
  • Fee charged: $9

Because the fee is calculated on $90.

If the coupon fully discounts the invoice total, percentage and fixed amount fees may calculate as $0.

Examples:

  • $100 subscription
  • $100 off coupon
  • 10% fee
  • Fee charged: $0
  • $100 subscription
  • $200 off coupon
  • $10 fixed fee
  • Fee charged: $0

Percentage coupons

For percentage coupons, fees are calculated after the coupon discount has been applied.

Percentage coupons do not discount fixed amount fees.

Examples:

  • $100 subscription
  • 20% off coupon
  • 10% fee
  • Fee charged: $8

Because the fee is calculated on $80.

  • $100 subscription
  • 100% off coupon
  • 10% fee
  • Fee charged: $0
  • $100 subscription
  • 100% off coupon
  • $10 fixed fee
  • Fee charged: $10

Subscription billing behavior

For subscriptions with one-time charges, fees are calculated on the first payment and adjusted for recurring payments.

If a limited-duration coupon expires, fees are not recalculated automatically for future subscription payments.
